When the art and craft markets open up their
stalls against this majestic backdrop Wernigerode's town centre becomes a
unique experience for all. Thousands of lights sparkle on several hundred
metres of strings adorning the streets and building facades.
The celebrations really get going when the Lord Mayor of Wernigerode declares
the market open by cutting into a giant 'Stollen' cake. It is a long standing
tradition for the township to erect several Christmas trees the most impressive
of which takes pride of place outside the historic town hall.
